A happier note: blue skies, warm spring rays, pancakes and possibly the best espresso I have had in a while, at the much-recommended Pancake Café.
I wasted no time in converting the drink into an affagato (a shot of coffee coupled with a spoonful of vanilla ice-cream) and relished the aura of spring’s approach.
On Palace Green the Durham Palestine Educational Trust was holding a charity book fair, sweetly balancing the hordes of UKIP and Labour canvassers and made all the more joyful for a 1920 copy of The Mill on the Floss – had I brought a second suitcase, my plundering would have been voracious.
